He became only the seventh contestant to claim the top prize on the ITV series.

Speaking to The Mirror, Roman explained that Clarkson had urged him to treat the 50‑50 lifeline carefully and only use it when he already had a sense of where the answer might lie.

As he put it: “He had a very good advice about the 50/50 lifeline.

"I've seen people misuse that on the show where if they don't know any of the four answers and they use 50/50, well they've still got two answers they don't know.

"So you really have to use it if you've got an inkling that one or two will be right.

"I didn't actually use it till the end and I didn't actually need to use it, but that stayed with me throughout the show.”

Roman held onto the lifeline until the final question, which asked him to identify the trademark logo, first used in 1876, that appears in Ulysses and in works by Picasso and Manet.

He said he had “something in his head” but wasn’t fully confident after seeing the four options.

He then activated the 50‑50, leaving Coca‑Cola and Bass Ale.

Roman opted for Bass Ale, prompting Clarkson to respond: “But you don’t know that,” with Roman replying: “It’s because of the painting.”

The choice proved correct, securing him the £1million.
