Learner drivers are being told to only use officially approved instructors.
DVSA warns learners to use approved instructors as driving test delays persist
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has issued a warning to learners as pressure on the driving test system continues, with long waiting times still affecting thousands across the UK.
Demand for practical driving tests remains high, with availability struggling to keep up in many areas. As a result, the DVSA is encouraging learners to make sure they are learning with qualified professionals.
In a message on X, the DVSA said: “Need to start driving lessons? You can find DVSA approved driving instructors by visiting GOV.UK. Simply enter your postcode to find approved driving instructors near you.”
The agency’s official search tool allows learners to find approved driving instructors (ADIs) and, in some cases, view their grading. This helps ensure learners are receiving proper training from qualified professionals during a period where delays to testing remain a concern.
However, the DVSA warned that not all approved instructors choose to appear on the public database. This means learners may need to carry out additional checks before booking lessons.
Drivers can confirm an instructor’s credentials directly with the DVSA by providing the instructor’s name and ADI number. Enquiries can be made through phone, email, webchat, or WhatsApp.
The advice comes as part of ongoing efforts to support learners navigating delays in the system and to ensure they receive safe and reliable instruction while waiting to take their test.
The DVSA has previously highlighted concerns around unregulated or unofficial instructors, warning that learners risk receiving poor-quality training if they do not verify credentials.
With test backlogs continuing in many regions, officials say choosing a qualified instructor is more important than ever to ensure learners are fully prepared when test slots become available.
