Passengers travelling through London Stansted Airport are being warned of potential delays over the Early May bank holiday weekend as strike action is set to impact services.
UK airport set for May bank holiday disruption
Around 100 workers are expected to walk out between May 3 and May 6, raising concerns about disruption at one of the UK's busiest travel hubs. The airport, which is the fourth busiest in the country, usually sees a surge in passenger numbers during the holiday period.
The strike has been organised by Unite the Union and will primarily involve staff responsible for assisting passengers with reduced mobility. These workers play a key role in helping travellers navigate the airport, including escorting them through terminals.
Industrial action was announced after employees rejected a "substandard" pay offer. Staff employed by ABM, the contractor providing assistance services at the airport, have argued that the proposal does not address concerns around low wages.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "ABM staff do a vital job for passengers at the airport, yet they are struggling with low pay while their employer makes huge profits. This situation is unacceptable and workers at ABM continue to have Unite's full support."
The walkout is likely to mean longer waits, especially for passengers needing extra assistance, as reduced staffing could slow everything from check-in to security and boarding.
Passengers are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check with their airline or the airport for updates before travelling.
